Re: Hired help
Hi Matt,
Not sure about that idea. As far as I am aware there are no other ops in my immediate area. What % would be fair in those circumstances.
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks. The cosultant is fairly confident that it will work- time will tell I suppose.
I cant do that as I will be risking too much. I am not the sort to take unneccessary risks, but my insurer Simply Business has said that if I dont have employer liability for anyone helping me, then I am taking a big risk. If the person falls and breaks a leg, or has any injury, they can sue me. Also, my public liability insurance is void if I take someone on without taking out employer liability. Even a relative could sue me if they got hurt, which is unlikely, but not impossible- how crazy things have become. Anyone doing this is taking a risk if something goes pear shaped.
I may have found someone today through an agency, but it will cost £11 per hour. I will double up on busy sites, if they say yes and then I will only need to employ him for two weeks, if I refill them every 4 weeks.
If I dont have a plan, then the only other option is to sell and that is not as easy as it may seem.
Thanks,
Paul
Could you not find a fellow operator and give them a % for running the business?
Matt makes a good point, time to send out the olive branch to a rival operator?
Having spoken to you on the phone, you come across as a decent guy whom I am sure would return the favour to someone helping you out in your hour of need!
If all else fails, could you not rent the business out for three months to a student or a jobless youngster whom is known to you or in your extended family?
I know I have a few nephews who would job at the chance of a job like this and lot less likely to steel from you if related!
Simply business is really puttinhg the frighteners on you, they will stoop to new lows in order to try and sell you policies you dont need!
If you rent it out and get a simple agreement drawn up saying all machines remain your property and just give license for someone else to OPERATE your machines for an agreed period in return for them imdemnify you against ALL risks they may come across in the course of maintaining your machines?
Cheers
Nigel

Re: Hired help
Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your comments.
Having looked at this in great detail this week, I dont think Simply Business are bullshitting me. I have checked this out with other sources, including a relative who manages a very large business, using drivers and I believe that it is true.
My family live quite a way away and either all have work, or are work shy. I would however, consider another local operator as a way to keep things going, whilst I get better.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Hired help
I suppose % wise you should work out your takings & hours worked in a week and go from there. I think by the time you have trained someone up, shown them routes etc it may be easier and less hassle even if you dont make much whilst you are on the mend you can make it up with benefits such as SSP and any other benefits you are entitled to. I got incapacity for quite a while after back op.

Re: Hired help
Hi Matt,
I am hoping that I will be able to travel with someone doing the driving after 4/5 weeks post op. I wouldnt want to send someone off on my rounds, unless they operated the same business.
I have chatted to an agency today about a driver and that could work. If it takes me 12 weeks to get back to doing the job myself, then doubling up on certain towers and operating monthly, would mean that I would only need to pay a driver two weeks wages in 3 months. Any ad hoc problems, could be sorted by my wife, either taking another fully stocked machine to replace an empty one, or her taking me out etc to deal with individual sites.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Hired help
Paul,
I could possibly help you out on a % basis a couple of days a month, use my own van, stock & insurance if necessary. You could come along for the ride as well. I would'nt do it for profit, just to help you out whilst you recover. Think about it.

Re: Hired help
Hi Pete,
Thank you very much for offering to help me. I really appreciate your offer, but as you are based in London, am I not too far away.
I am still waiting on information from the consultant to confirm if I will be able to travel for 10 hours per day after around 4- 5 weeks. If I cant travel around with someone after this length of time, then I will have to re think all my ideas.
From March onwards, I normally top up each of my 6 rounds fortnightly. Prior to the surgery, I will top every one up and double up where necessary and where sites are willing. The problem will be in 4/5 weeks after my op, as 70% of them will need topping up urgently, ( based on previous sales figures) so if I have someone helping me, I will ideally need help for 6 days in a row. This is why I am looking at employing someone through the agency, as they can send another person at short notice, should the first become ill, or find permanent work etc. I anticipate that I will need up to 3 individual weeks of help in the 3 months after my op. After that I should be able to lift without any problem.
Thanks again,
Paul

Far better an experienced vender than a newbie from the agency IMO.
