Accountant for Snack vending

Post by T-Vend »

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Anybody have recommendations for accountants that specialise in Vending? Would like to have someone that understands the VAT rules depending on where machines are sited etc.

Thanks
James

Any accountant will understand VAT rules. I am puzzeled by your query though, VAT liability depends on the status of your business and is not affected by the location of your machines. Basically if you are registered you pay HMRC the difference of, VAT on sales less VAT paid out on purchases. If you register for Flat Rate VAT you pay a reduced rate on sales but can't claim back VAT on purchases.

Hi
The reason I asked, is that there’s -long pages on hmrc site about when vat exempt products then become liable for vat depending on where the vending machine is situated, looking for somebody that’s exprienced in it to help dechiper the jargon.

You find out what is vat exempt from your purchase invoice

Never heard of vat exempt dependant on location unless maybe offshore ?
Doesn't make sense im afraid mate only time a vat exempt product attracts vat is if it has been used as am ingredient or similar

Ie coffee has no vat so.selling coffee granules no vat charged. However if you put them in a machine and you 'make" a drink you have provided a service so this becomes vatable.

Do youvhave a copy.of the extractvwording you are referring to ?

Think I've found what your on about, applied to food only sandwiches etc and it is to do again with the service element being added or not and weather it is classed as take away food or eat on premises similar to Greggs

So.unless your doing cold.food through the vending machines it will not apply.

If you are then simply if its in a canteen and they can sit down then service element applies so vat added. If there's no where to sit ie in a corridor its takeaway so no vat added.

Thanks Matt

When I’m at the office later I’ll dig up the link on my PC.
I’m sure I found a piece about if the machine was in a workplace and the food was consumed on the premises then, no matter where the machine was sited, it was automatically deemed to be in a canteen so you had to charge VAT on items you’d purchased that were exempt.

I also wonder what defines a “canteen”.. I have some sites where it’s a small room with one table and a couple of chairs and nothing else apart from my machines and a water cooler, would you class that as one?

(I should say that I do sell sandwiches in some, which is what started all this).

Bit of a loophole then, as surely if you move the machine out the room and 20 feet along the corridor it's no longer in a canteen? ;) :D :D
