New allergen label law

Post by pandaanda »

Just wondering what people are doing to comply with the new allergen labelling law that came in in December , a couple of sites have asked me how it affects vending machines and I don't know what to tell them really , does anyone know what we should be doing ?

Cheers

Hi,

Tell them you have:

A. Liability insurance - you should have this anyway as an added insurance, and of course it is more professional.
B. Tell them that you purchase your products from professional suppliers therefore, they have to comply by law.

C. None of the above! This could cost you sites this year and, if any allergy problems arise, you are likely to be liable.

Happy munching.

liability insurance will not cover you for allergens, you need a sticker on your machine saying:

ALLERGY ADVICE
ALLERGENS MAY BE PRESENT IN PRODUCTS PURCHASED FROM THIS MACHINE

Are you saying that apart from the products having the relevant information, that we must duplicate this again on the actual machine!

Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!

My understanding is this only relates to bulk items and not sealed pots, I have notices on my coffee machines for example, there is specific wording which really is daft. From memory its states something like white coffee, Cappuccino may contain milk, hot chocolate may contain cocoa............. No sh!t sherlock

It is law however and you must have signage and a photograph of it also a list in the office of what contains what etc

If what you are saying is true, and that we need a sign, photographs and clear indications of what has what!

Towers are not included if sealed pots

On 13 December, new legislation (the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation 1169/2011) will require food businesses to provide allergy information on food sold unpackaged, in for example catering outlets, deli counters, bakeries and sandwich bars. There will also be changes to existing legislation on labelling allergenic ingredients in prepacked foods. Guidance has been developed to help businesses meet these new requirements and this page will continue to be updated as more support tools are made available. More information about the new European legislation can be found on the European Commission website at the link provided.

For prepacked food; in addition to the normal statutory information, all allergens need to be highlighted in some way e.g. bold type, itallicised etc. This is the manufacturers responsiblily. Thats it, I didn't read anything in the new legislation that says you must have vending machines labelled as in the above post and the notice is insufficient anyway. Most pubs, for theprepared food they serve, have a notice saying 'For food allergen information please ask a member of staff before ordering'. For prepackaged food, this only covers food packaged after the leglislation date, time is allowed to flush existing stock through the system.
