Refurbing towers

Post by radical.richard »

Hi all

Im still refurbing towers, but rather than pinching unstickered rings from towers as I have been to get a new tower, Im now into the dregs and having to remove stickers.

Thank you Barbara for the tip of using a hair dryer, this certainly works for some types of stickers (especially the jelly bean ones ;-) I have however taken to putting the rings in the oven for ten minutes at 100C rather than dealing with the noise of the hairdryer.

Some older ones seem to be paper and gum based which come off with a soaking in a bucket, but I have a few troublesome ones, from tubz vending they are certainly older stickers, and once their top plastic cellophane layer has peeled off, there is an unpeelable load of printed label gunk left behind, that is really difficult to shift as it breaks up when you scratch it and you cant peel it.

Does anyone have any tips as to the best way to get these off, they primarily seem to be Mixed Bon Bons and Fizzy Cola Bottles with a yellow background. And no doubt are quite a number of years old. I also have some rings with Yellow soft plastic labels with red writing on saying Twist and the product name, no pictures they seem to come off in pieces as they stretch, again any tips would be great.

I found out white spirit is great at getting the sticky stuff off, after the stickers are peeled, and is much cheaper than sticky stuff remover, but need some better weather before I do any more as it stinks the house out if you do it inside.

Cheers

P.S. If you do use my oven method, dont leave the rings in there too long, lost one to melting, otherwise it works well for most plastic type labels.

Just also found something really funny, loads of rings have multiple labels on them as the products have changed, but uncovered some of the yellow labels with red writing 'twist to select' and the product name overwritten in black marker with the new product - 'class' LOL. Cant imagine why the vendor was on the second hand market. . . . .

Morning Richard

Well, that's a first, putting stuff in the oven, but hey, if it works then great!

I can see the benefits .... cook Sunday roast whilst cooking off the labels on the tower trays .... :D Multi-tasking at it's best.

Kind regards,

Barbara

U might be able to score the labels lightly with a knife before u put them into soak....Might help ease them off

Problem is the labels I have an issue with already break up too easily, scoring wont make it any better, its almost like there is no label, and certainly nothing to peel apart from the top clear cellophane type layer that then leaves the gunk behind.

I can scratch it off with my finger nails, but my finger tips are hurting and I have loads more to clean up.

Im thinking its better to just bin them, unless anyone has some advice.

Cheers

Richard

This is getting silly now, funny though. tee hehe

Adding a tad of salt, which acts as an abrasive during the cooking process can help too, touch of garlic oil to finish it off 5 minutes before taking out of the oven will give it a nice glaze. (this is a joke and please don't do!) .

Why don't you just go out and buy a few spare rings? Will save you time & money in t he end.
